They're calling it the "Hugh Laurie syndrome." "He and 'House' were phenomenal successes, so American TV producers suddenly embraced the idea of hiring a British actor to play an American. It's partly superstitious, and it's partly the novelty factor," says Tim Gray, editor in chief of 'Variety.' Damian Lewis, for instance, plays Nicholas Brody in 'Homeland.'
