Lifetime drops 'Drop Dead Diva'
Posted January 16, 2013
Drop Dead Diva ended Season 4 in September with a knock 'em dead cliffhanger, but now that the show has been canceled, fans will have to imagine for themselves how everything turns out.
Lifetime announced Wednesday it was canceling the one-hour drama that centered around the misadventures of aspiring model Deborah "Deb" Dobkins, who, after dying in a car crash, returns to earth in the plus-sized body of lawyer Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliot).
Lifetime's decision came after the cable network sought cost-cutting options from producer Sony Pictures Television. Sony declined comment on whether it will seek another network or outlet for future seasons.
The Season 4 finale was all about Deb, Jane and Jane's fiancé, Owen. It's very complicated, but here's what happened:
On the day Deb, whose spirit resides in Jane's body, plans to wed Owen, Grayson, Deb's true love in her past life, professes his love to Jane (not knowing Deb lives inside Jane's body). Grayson kisses Jane, Owen walks in, has a heart attack, dies, and at that moment, Jane's spirit, which has been residing in heaven, comes back to earth and wakes up in Owen's body.
Phew! Now that's a cliff hanger of epic proportions.
The show had a faithful following and the Season 4 finale garnered 2.76 million viewers, a season high.
Drop Dead Diva's cast also included Jackson Hurst, Josh Stamberg, Margaret Cho, April Bowlby, Kate Levering and Carter MacIntyre. Numerous guest stars appeared on the show including Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian.
